It has been forever since I updated my blog. This past year has been incredibly busy, but all of my hard work payed off when I graduated in May with a Masters Degree in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology!
In August I moved and started graduate school, which was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I made it a point to push my mind and thoroughly understand everything I was being taught. Not only did this pay off with my grades, but it helped me realize that I am capable of much more than I give myself credit for.
The Fall semester was very curriculum heavy. There were many days I would wake up at 8:00am, go to class from 9:00am to 10:00am, take a quiz, then go to lab from 10:00am to 3:00pm with a 15 minute lunch break if I was lucky. I would finally eat a real meal after lab, then meet up with some of my girlfriends and spend our time chatting, eating some more and studying in the library until 2:00am in preparation for a test we may have had the next week. I would finally go home around 2:30am to get ready to repeat it all over again the next day. This was my typical Friday! The last three weeks of fall semester (finals week) were by far the hardest weeks of my life. Weirdly enough I learned some things about myself; like the fact that my eyes twitch uncontrollably when I'm severely sleep deprived (my friends always got a good laugh at that), and that sleep deprivation also caused my body to feel cold when it wasn't. I also learned that you can order a large pizza to the library at 1 in the morning and carry it up to your study room without anyone looking twice.
Spring semester proved to be much more laboratory intensive. I spent part of my time in class while juggling 30+ hours in the lab doing research. Spring semester culminated in a poster presentation where every member of the program presented the research he/she conducted over the past 4 months. After all was said and done, I graduated as a Master of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the end of Spring semester!
All the long nights running on 1 hour of sleep and all the times I stayed in the library reading instead of going out with friends, were well worth it. Grad school has been the most rewarding experience of my life so far. I have accomplished something that not everyone is willing to commit their life to do and I am extremely proud of myself for doing it!
